Great West Road: Golden Location for Office Space near Heathrow

Mention Heathrow, and it’s easy to think ‘airport’. But there is so much more to this area than its reputation for international air travel. In fact, for those seeking a place to locate a business, choosing office space near Heathrow could be a very beneficial move indeed, especially if that office space is situated close to the Golden Mile on the Great West Road.

From the Great West Road in Brentford to Heathrow Airport it’s just a 25-minute drive, and it doesn’t take much longer than that by Tube via the Piccadilly Line from Boston Manor Station. In between these two points you’ll find the Golden Mile, a 2.4 mile stretch of the Great West Road, part of the major London to Bristol road known as the A4.

But why is the Golden Mile so called? A good question, and something we’re about to explore in more detail.

A brief history of 'The Golden Mile'

The Golden Mile sits between Gillette Corner and the Chiswick roundabout. No less than 450 businesses currently reside here, making it one of the most vital assets for the London Borough of Hounslow, and indeed the wider area of West London. But the Golden Mile moniker dates back quite a bit further.

In 1925, King George V cut the ribbon, opening the Great West Road to the public. Not long after this, a high concentration of industry sprung up, thriving amongst the newly created traffic flowing through the area, no longer stifled by the congestion of Brentford High Street. Numerous factories, many of architectural note, were rapidly constructed, housing the likes of Hudson-Essex Motors, Smith’s Potato Crisps, Firestone Tyre Company, Macleans and Gillette to name just a few. Considerable social and economic changes swept through the district. Jobs were in abundance, and businesses enjoyed a great deal of prosperity. So, the Golden Mile accolade was awarded.

Still a 'golden' business location

Despite the fact that several manufacturers have moved in and out since its heyday, the Great West Road and its Golden Mile remain to this day key commercial centres, with many businesses especially locating here to be close to Heathrow Airport.

And the history of this area continues. Take a tour along the Golden Mile, and you’ll instantly note many of the striking Art Deco buildings still intact, thankfully protected by listed status. A truly inspiring place to rent office space near Heathrow.

In terms of major players doing business in this area today, there are several famous names. UK multinational pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline plc for example set up its head office, GSK House, here in 2000. And multinational advertising corporation JCDecaux resides within the Grade II listed Art Deco style building that was originally built as the Currys factory in 1936.
